How Luyanda found her way back to her grandmother after being in an institution
A local community hospital in Tsakane became the starting point of a remarkable journey for a 2-year-old girl named Luyanda. The maternal grandmother took her to the hospital after noticing the child’s deteriorating health. Social workers were subsequently involved by the hospital and asked the maternal grandmother to assume parental responsibility and possibly foster the child concerned. Luna’s parents have been struggling with drug abuse, impairing their judgment and ability to care for their daughter.
The beginning
Recognising the need for a stable environment, the social workers urged that the parents be referred to rehabilitation services and for Luyanda’s maternal grandmother to step in as the guardian, providing a home for her granddaughter. She accepted the responsibility, determined to give Luyanda the love and care she deserved.
Challenges along the way
The parents were then instructed not to contact or visit the child without the approval and supervision of the social workers; however, they continually and violently opposed those measures. Faced with this challenge, the social workers decided to place Luyanda in an institution.
A beacon of hope
But amidst the turmoil, hope emerged when the paternal grandmother, Sibu stepped forward, offering her love and home to her beloved granddaughter. With the court’s approval, Leticia found herself in a loving family once again, this time with her paternal grandmother, who still ensures that the maternal grandmother maintains contact with the child.
Luyanda’s development and growth
Life before Luyanda was sad. “Our family has always been close-knit, cherishing each moment together,” said the grandmother. However, when Luyanda was not living with us, a void consumed our home. Visiting her in the institution filled me with sadness; I couldn’t bear the thought of her growing up without a family. As someone who never had a mother, I was determined to ensure that my grandchild didn’t face the same fate. The news of Luyanda transitioning out of the institution and returning home to us brought so much joy into my heart.
Reunion and adjustment
The grandmother said she cried the first time Luna was reunited with them, overwhelmed with intense happiness and sadness because she had been dreaming of that day. “When Luyanda first arrived, she was curious about her surroundings; however, over time, she adapted and is settling in very well,” said Sibu.
The reunion with Luyanda has brought new happiness into our family. With 11 grandchildren already, Luyanda has seamlessly found herself in our family, adding to the love and togetherness. And as Luyanda continues her journey, she serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who know her, a reminder that with love and determination, anything is possible.
