A journey to reunification, Valencia’s path back to family and stability
Introduction
Valencia, a 3-year-old girl, faced early separation from her biological parents Vicky and Gary due to their struggles with drug and alcohol abuse. This caused significant dangers to Valencia and her siblings Gabriella, Victoria, and Cassidy, as their parents were often unable to provide a stable home and supervision. The volatile environment caused by their substance abuse threatened the safety and well-being of the children. Recognising the urgency of the situation, Valencia’s paternal aunt reported the matter to a statutory organisation which led to Valencia and her other siblings to be placed in separate institutions while the parents lived in a shelter.
A path to healing
Valencia’s parents took a courageous step toward change by seeking support from SANCA, a rehabilitation center for those battling substance abuse. Their commitment to rebuilding their family was evident in their unwavering attendance at SANCA sessions, where they embraced the journey to sobriety and rediscovered the essence of parenthood. Regular visits with Valencia at the center showed their determination to reconnect with their daughter and create a better life for their family. Their efforts flourished as Valencia gradually began to spend more time with her parents, signaling a new chapter in their family’s story.
Challenges along the journey
Life before Valencia’s return home was difficult, with the family struggling with addiction and the outcome of their lifestyle on their children. “When I would visit her at the center my heart would break, I could see how much I had failed my children. I knew I had to change my life for the better, to create a safe environment for my children”, said Vicky. The news of Valencia returning home brought a mix of emotions—excitement for the opportunity to rebuild their family and strength to overcome their past.
A bond rekindled
Valencia’s reunion with her parents was a journey filled with both uncertainty and hope. Initially unfamiliar with the faces that held her past, she grappled with moments of confusion and withdrawal, finding solace in sleep. However, significant changes have occurred since then. She has become much more outspoken, always engaging with her mother. Furthermore, her relationship with her siblings flourished. Together, they navigated family life, each moment strengthening the ties that bound them together.
Overcoming adversity
Valencia’s adjustment to life at home marked a significant improvement in her emotional and mental well-being. Once reserved and fearful, she gradually embraced her new home and found confidence. Reintegrating into the family dynamic allowed Valencia to flourish, showcasing her personality and developmental milestones.
Looking to the future
With the journey ahead, the family continues to receive unwavering support and guidance. Through ongoing reassessment and nurturing care, they ensure that each member receives the assistance they need to flourish. By prioritising their children’s well-being and fostering a loving environment, the parents are committed to creating a brighter future for their family.
