Pathways to success: empowering children in CYCC’s with career exploration and guidance
As National Child Protection Week approaches this month, our focus is on promoting a culture of respect for children’s rights and ensuring they grow up in safe environments free from neglect and exploitation. We also aim to equip them with the necessary tools to thrive in society and create better lives for themselves as they grow. Recognizing the obstacles child face, the Department of Social Development joined forces with One Child One Family and Deloitte to host a workshop for 32 young people living in Igugulethu Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) as part of the Independence Living Programme (ILP).
This workshop initiative with Deloitte is designed to support young adults transitioning out of CYCCs with the necessary tools in building an effective career as a young adult. The workshop addressed the challenges faced by youth who often struggle with independent living and workforce integration due to their reliance on caregivers. By providing independent living skills and career guidance, this collaborative partnership equipped young adults with the tools they need to thrive in the real world.
“We are excited to impart tangible tips to the children that can make a difference in their lives moving forward. These are practical skills they were never taught and will provide them with a solid foundation for building their future careers,” says Katherine Prangley, Deloitte’s Partner Officer Leader.
Research shows that children who grow up in CYCCs often encounter difficulties in developing the necessary skills for independent living. Their heavy reliance on caregivers can impact their decision-making ability, hindering their transition into adulthood. Consequently, they face challenges in entering the workforce and adapting to life outside the institution.
During the workshop, one of the challenges faced was getting the children into a space where they felt comfortable communicating their needs and asking questions. Additionally, challenges included understanding the logistics of CV writing, the impact of social media, and how to build a personal brand when entering the workplace. However, over time they were able to express themselves and their needs.
The Deloitte team shared their personal career experiences to demonstrate that success is achievable even in the face of difficulties. They provided transitional skills such as CV building, interview preparation, career management, and financial planning, including bank management, budgeting, and savings.
Sharing this information with the children is aimed at helping them thrive as young adults in the outside world. “Nothing is out of reach for these children, and we can start setting them up for success,” added Katherine.
Moving forward, we hope to create lasting connections with the children through ongoing initiatives. With support from the Department of Social Development, the children learned about the importance of career planning from an early stage, making Career Day a resounding success.
